If you are exploring the Flint Hills and stumble upon an amazing lake, complete with waterfalls, south of Council Grove, KS, you may discover Lake Kahola! Kahola is a native word meaning "spring water". 800 acres of lake and park, of which 405 acres comprises the lake, 7 miles of total shore line. Lake Kahola was built in 1936 as a water source for the City of Emporia by th WPA; the dam was completed in 1937, fishing cabins were eventually added on leased lots. In 2024, the lake house lots and just a few vacant lots are owned by cabin owners/HOA members, totaling around 180 + lots. The City of Emporia sold the lake to the cabin owners in the 2000's, thus making it non-public ownership. Existing owners were able to purchase their lot. A full-time caretaker is on-site year round, and there are committees that perform various tasks, as well as an elected HOA Board. Social events throughout the year include BBQ, Fireworks, Poker Run, Fishing Tournament, Cardboard Boat Races, and a Holiday party to end the year. The Annual Dirty Kanza gravel bike race, now known as Unbound Gravel Race, often has the race route go over the Kahola Dam. Lake Kahola remains zebra mussel free, thanks to countless volunteers. Lake Kahola offers fishing, boating for vessels up to 24', jet skiing, kayaking, paddle boarding and more!
